Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 is a special version of the Windows Server operating system that allows multiple users to simultaneously share one computer. Each user station, typically consisting of a monitor, keyboard, and mouse connected to a station hub, provides an independent Windows desktop environment. The station hubs connect to the single host computer through USB or video cables and use the host computer's processing capabilities.

Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium Edition supports up to 20 simultaneously connected user stations. The host computer also can be used as a station to support one additional user. The Premium edition also supports joining an Active Directory domain if needed, providing users with access to network services.

MultiPoint Server can be useful for organizations or libraries with computer labs, classrooms, or other collaborative environments where using just one computer for several users can save energy, simplify maintenance, and lower expenses. The ability to share a monitor in splitscreen view between two independent users and to connect older machines as stations over a local area network (LAN) provides further cost- and energy-saving options.

MultiPoint Server includes MultiPoint Manager, which allows the primary user to monitor and manage MultiPoint Server user stations. Primary users can create accounts for an unlimited number of standard users, who can access their customized desktop and settings by logging into any station. Primary users also can view full screens of individual users or thumbnail screens of all active users, allowing them to monitor user activity without leaving their station. They can suspend all stations at once or broadcast the desktop of their own or any user's computer to all other connected user stations.

Other capabilities include the following:

• Software programs installed on the host computer can be accessed from any connected station, without separately installing the software for each user. (Note that Microsoft Office and other Microsoft programs available through Volume Licensing require a separate license for each user station in a MultiPoint Server environment. Other software manufacturers may have their own licensing requirements for shared computing environments.)
• Public Documents folders allow users to share information and collaborate on projects, while users' private folders can be accessed only by the user or the administrator.
• Traditional desktops, laptops, and thin clients also can act as stations by connecting to the host computer using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) over a local area network (LAN). This allows an organization to use existing and possibly older computers as stations without removing those computers' ability to operate independently (devices connecting over LAN must be licensed in the same manner as other user stations).

Licensing: This product includes a MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium Edition server license. Each user station that connects to MultiPoint Server must have two types of client access licenses (CALs): a MultiPoint Server CAL and a Windows Server CAL. These two CALs, licensed per device (a user station), are available as a single donation through PNGO Program (see Related Products below). If the host computer is used as a user station and not just for administration, organizations must acquire both a MultiPoint Server CAL and a Windows Server CAL for it as well.

Individual MultiPoint Server device CALs are also available through PNGO Program for users with valid Windows Server CALs. MultiPoint Server user CALs, as opposed to device CALs, are not available through PNGO Program since this kind of licensing would be more costly in a typical MultiPoint Server setup than licensing per device. For example, a setup with 10 user stations would require just 10 device CALs for any number of users. If licensed per user, the same setup would require each user to have a separate license.

At the Volume Licensing Service Center, the product key for Windows MultiPoint Server will be listed as Windows Server 2008 R2.

64-Bit Only: MultiPoint Server 2011 requires a 64-bit processor with at least two cores. See System Requirements below for more information.

This product includes the Workgroup Edition of System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 R2 and five server management licenses (MLs.)

VMM is a server application for administration and management of Microsoft and VMware virtual machine guests and virtual machine hosts. It provides network administrators real-time views of resource allocation and allows rapid reconfiguration.

Administrators can access VMM through the Administrator Console or through the Windows PowerShell command-line interface (CLI).

When a virtual machine is deployed, VMM analyzes performance data and resource requirements for both the workload and the host, allowing the administrator to fine-tune placement algorithms to receive optimal deployment recommendations from the software. Tools and wizards simplify converting physical machines to virtual ones (physical-to-virtual, or P2V, conversions) and converting VMware virtual machines to the Microsoft VHD format (virtual-to-virtual, or V2V, conversions).

The VMM Administrator Console provides a real-time central view of all virtual machines and resource usage; resource settings can be changed on virtual machines without interrupting workloads, and virtual machine guests can be rapidly migrated from one host to another to optimize physical resources. For example, if network storage is close to being overallocated in one location, a network administrator can change the allocation.

The Workgroup Edition can be used to manage a maximum of five virtual machine hosts. Organizations requiring support for management of more than five virtual machine hosts through an Administrator Console or CLI should request VMM Enterprise Server Management Licenses, which also include the VMM server software if requested.

VMM can be configured to allow nonadministrators to deploy nonserver virtual environments through a self-service web portal. For example, developers could create an instance of a specific operating system in a virtual environment to test the operation of their software with that operating system. Client MLs license these nonadministrators to use the virtual environments.

Service Pack 1 includes support for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, new dynamic memory settings for better scripting and administration, and RemoteFX video settings for enhancing the graphical capabilities of virtual machines.

Licenses Included: The Workgroup Edition includes five server MLs.

User and OSE client MLs are also available. A client ML is required for each nonserver OSE managed through VMM.

Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 is a server application that extends the management capabilities of System Center Configuration Manager 2007 to Windows Embedded devices. It allows organizations to deploy, assess, and update a variety of specialized devices — including thin clients, point-of-service (POS) terminals, and digital signage — running Windows Embedded software.

Embedded Device Manager allows administrators to use Configuration Manager to manage embedded devices in the same manner as PCs and servers. Similar devices are automatically aggregated into device collections for simplified management, servicing, and reporting.

Administrators can configure settings for embedded devices, including password, proxy, VPN, and WiFi. They can also control when updates should be applied to embedded devices with write filter protection, which prevents unauthorized changes.

License Requirements: This product includes only the Windows Embedded Device Manager server license. A client management license (ML) is required for each nonserver device managed by Embedded Device Manager. Client MLs are licensed per user or per operating system environment (OSE).

Software Assurance: Under the Software Assurance program, you have the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of your coverage.

A Dynamics CRM employee self service device CAL provides a computer or other device with limited API access and limited read-write access to a Dynamics CRM server.

The employee self service device CAL use rights include the following:

·         Read-only access to Accounts, Contacts, Cases, Leads, Activities, and Custom entity records

·         Data privileges to create Accounts, Contacts, Cases, Leads, Activities, and Custom entity records, and to append, append to, and update records created by other CRM users

·         Access to CRM server software and Dynamics CRM functionality through any application or graphical user interface other than the Dynamics CRM client

These use rights do not include data privileges to assign, share, or delete records.

User MLs are also available. A user ML allows any number of Windows Embedded OSEs to be managed by Embedded Device Manager as long as only one user has access to them.

Small Business Server 2011 Essentials provides home offices and small organizations with many of the features used by large organizations — folder and printer sharing, remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools — in an integrated product that supports up to 25 users.

Small Business Server 2011 is available only as a 64-bit operating system and can be installed only on a server with a 64-bit processor.

Small Business Server 2011 Essentials provides the core Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard technologies, but not those appropriate only to medium-to-large enterprises.

Small Business Server Essential's simplified management console allows administrators to organize and maintain an organization's file structure and displays a comprehensive view of the health and security of client computers and servers in the network to manage common IT tasks and address technology issues. The console's Home window shows whether security, updates, backups, and other functions are functioning properly or need attention at a glance by green checks or warning icons.

Remote Web Access gives any user with a web browser secure access to email, internal websites, shared folders, organization and administration links, and networked computers. Windows Mobile–based devices can also access e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks. Access can be restricted by assignment to groups or roles.

A centralized data repository provides access to documents and allows control over how information is shared by users on the network. Data management and analysis tools make it possible to use server-based business applications or run a multiple business applications suites on an additional server.

License Included: This product includes a server license. No client access licenses (CALs) are required.
